2.8L versions of the 300Tdi

Here at Motor & Diesel Engineering, our speciality is the LR 300 Tdi and International HS 2.8 engines. Over the last 25 years, we have developed conversion kits to fit these engines in the following Land Rover vehicles: All Defender, all Range Rover pre-2002 and all Discovery pre-2003.

The International HS 2.8 engine is a larger capacity version of the 300 Tdi, it still utilises the simplicity of the 300tdi yet with more power and significantly more torque. The 2.8300 comes as standard with a VNT turbocharger and suitably uprated fuel injection pump, these, in conjunction with the extra capacity means the engine produces 135bhp as standard with 277lbf ft of torque at 1400 Rpm.

2.8300 Short engine:

As the International HS 2.8 is no longer in production we manufacture our own, this is known as a 2.8300.

A short 2.8300 engine is a partial built engine that is just the cylinder block, crankshaft, conrods and pistons. This level of engine is a great option if you wish build your own engine with just the 2.8L internals.

Our 2.8300 engine utilises a fully reconditioned 300Tdi cylinder block, the following process is carried out to the cylinder block:

  • The cylinder block is stripped removing all core plugs, oil gallery plugs and cam bearings so the block is completely bare, this then goes through a special acid clean bath to remove the rust deposits found in the water galleries.
  • After acid cleaning the block is rebored and honed to 93mm from the standard 90.5mm. This larger bore and increased stroke brings the capacity to 2.8L.
  • The cylinder face is skimmed, bringing the top deck back to new clean material.
  • With all machining done, the block is washed off to remove any swarf and cutting fluid.
  • Spray painted black.
  • New core plugs fitted.
  • New prefinished cam bearings are fitted.

With the cylinder block fully reconditioned and machined to 2.8L specs the engine build can commence. The below NEW parts are fitted to build a short 2.8300 engine, these are all OEM spec:

  • 2.8l Crankshaft
  • 2.8l Conrods
  • 2.8l Pistons
  • All bearings
  • Rear seal (special 2.8 version with extra lower fixings to help avoid leaks)

After a stripped engine build is finished it is then crated with the correct conversion parts and/or other engine parts to build up as a complete engine.
