Our kits with engines are complete and come with a fully detailed parts list and instructions. The only extra parts you may need are a heavy duty battery and front road springs, these can be supplied if required. |
|
Yes, Our most popular engine for re-power conversions is the International HS 2.8L TGV engine. This engine suits autos well. The high low speed torque characteristics give similar acceleration from rest as the V8. |
|
The standard transmission will work reasonably well with the V8 spec auto transmission but we recommend the fitting of a diesel governor and diesel kick down control cam. The 4th gear lock up speed should be 45 mph, this can be altered by changing the hysterisis spring in the valve block. The best torque converter is the one fitted to the 4 litre Disco or P38. (Fitted from 3.9 engine No. 36D52140C) |
Where ever possible we manufacture engine mounting brackets to suit the original chassis mounting brackets. The only exceptions are the 4 cylinder based 90 / 110 / 130 vehicle (2 Ό & 2 ½ litre petrol, 2 Ό & 2 ½ litre naturally aspirated diesel, 2 ½ litre turbo diesel and 200 Tdi variants). With these models the engine has to be moved forward to the V8 / 300 Tdi position, our Kit 152 has a pair of V8 engine chassis brackets to suit the new engine mounting brackets in Kit 152. These can be used with the standard 2.8 engine oil filter and cooler arrangement.
Please note :- The engine will not fit on to the old 4 cylinder LT77 gearbox as it is too far back and the exhaust will foul the bulkhead. The LT77, LT85 or R380 V8 gearbox is best. Use the cross member, tunnel cover, floor plates and propshafts as fitted to the 300 Tdi Defender, these are in our kit 152A. The above parts are not supplied in the base Kit 152.
Note :- If the R380 300 Tdi gearbox is used you will need Kit 152B not Kit 152 as the adaption to the engine is different. (Note :- The clutch housing on this gearbox needs modifying to fit the heavy duty clutch, see clutch notes below).

No, there are no modifications needed to the body work of the vehicle. All of the brackets we supply fit on with bolts, rivets or self tap screws. |
No! The engine differs in several ways,
1. Not all the engine mounting M12 holes are not drilled and tapped in the cylinder block. We drill and tap these with a special jig before the engines leave our works.
2. The rear end of the crankshaft is different. We supply a special crankshaft adapter and bush in the kit.
3. The engine oil filter arrangement is different. The oil filter is mounted further back and fouls the standard RH Tdi engine mounting bracket. A special 90° oil filter adapter is supplied in the kit to miss the bracket. The oil filter block also mounts the lubricating oil cooler (Modine type). The radiator engine oil cooler is not used but we do offer a remote oil cooler adaption Kit 160 which is part of the 200 Tdi Discovery Kit 156 due to the RH engine mounting bracket fouling the standard Modine oil cooler.
4. The turbocharger has different exhaust and compressor connections and the inlet manifold is different. All our kits have inter-cooler pipes & hoses and exhaust pipes to suit the new 2.8 engine.
5. The dipstick tube on the HS 2.8 lubricating oil sump would foul the front propshaft. We weld a special tube to the sump before the engine leaves our works.
Our conversion Kit 154 for Defender and Kit 151 for Discovery 300 Tdi include all the necessary parts to fit the new HS 2.8L TGV engine to these models.

The maximum torque of the HS 2.8L TGV engine is 375 Nm.
The maximum recommended torque for the R380 & LT77S gearbox is 380Nm, less than the maximum torque of the new HS 2.8L TGV engine. |
NO!!! See following data sheet on clutches.
CLUTCHES FOR INTERNATIONAL HS 2.8L TGV ENGINES
CLASSIC RANGE ROVER, DISCOVERY AND LAND ROVER DEFENDER CONVERSIONS
The flywheel on the Motor & Diesel supplied International HS 2.8L TGV engine re-power conversions is drilled to accept the standard Tdi 242 mm (9 ½) diameter clutch and the M&D heavy duty 250 mm diameter clutch.
If the standard 242 mm Tdi clutch is used we recommend that the heavy duty 242 mm clutch driven plate (52-13-03) is used. The standard Tdi clutch plate is only 235 mm diameter.
Note :- 52-13-03 is now included in all manual kits unless the 250 mm clutch is ordered.
We recommend the 250 mm heavy duty clutch kit for towing and heavy duty use.

Note :- With the R380 300 Tdi gearbox an exchange housing is required to give enough clearance between the clutch cover and housing when the 250 mm clutch is fitted.
NEW RANGE ROVER P38 (1994 to 2002)
The flywheel is drilled to accept the standard 240 mm pull type clutch cover as used in the BMW Range Rover diesel. Use 242 mm clutch driven plate 52-13-03 (pre-damped). |
